Languages play a crucial role in the daily lives of people not only as a tool for communication, education, social integration & development, but also a repository for each person’s unique identity, cultural history ,traditions & memory. But despite their immense value, languages around the world continue to disappear at an alarming rate. With this in mind, U.N declared 2019 The year of indigenous languages. This is an attempt to highlight the rich heritage of our Indian languages. According to the census of India of 2001, we are home to 122 major languages & 1599 other languages. However,figures from other sources vary, primarily due to differences in definition of the terms “languages” & “dialect”. The 2001 census recorded 30 languages which were spoken by more than a million native speakers & 122 which were spoken by more than 10,000 people. Eighth schedule of Indian constitution recognises 22 Indian languages. At present, there are demands for inclusion of 42 more languages in the eighth schedule of constitution. There are a list of languages who are becoming endangered, which means risk of falling out of use.
